The BLUEISLANDS project's goal is to identify, address and mitigate the effects of the seasonal variation of waste generation on Mediterranean islands as an effect of tourism, and establish the necessary conditions to fuel local loops of circular economy.

Project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, 2016-2019.

Highlights

The studying phase is almost over! Aiming to measure the correlation between tourism and waste generation, the analysis is using indicators such as quantification, or waste type and composition to evaluate the impact of marine litter on beaches, seawaters and coasts relevant to micro plastics. One of these surveys revealed that marine litter increases by 205% during the high touristic season.
