The amount of waste treated by Intradel in the recent years has been quite stable. The company managed 521,000 tons in 2016 compared to 517,000 tons in 2015. This represents 507 kilos per year per capita, including all types of waste. However, there are still disparities between the municipalities member of Intradel when it comes to sorting.

When looking at the ranking of municipalities where inhabitants are throwing fewer municipal waste in their bin, the municipalities where the system of double containers is implemented are in the first positions. On the contrary, the one using paying bags have worse performances.

“If the average is 136 kg by year and inhabitants, the municipalities with a paying bag have an average of 179kg collected while the one having a grey container for residual waste and a green container for organic waste have 102 kg”, adds Luc Joine, Director General of Intradel.

Regarding organic waste, Intradel is one of the firsts in Europe to launch collective containers in urban surroundings.  Marie-Christine Nossent, Director at Intradel, explained: “The collection by double container is sometimes problematic in urban surroundings, for some type of housing.  Thus, we deployed collective containers, off-ground, which can be accessed with a badge and which is weighing what people bring. This year, for the first time, we installed 55 of them. At the end, we are planning to have around 100. Like that, citizens will have only one container at home, the one for organic waste, and they can go whenever it suits them to the collective container for the residual waste. As the waste is weighed each time the container is open, there is an equity between citizens”
