The upcoming European Parliament’s vote on the Nature Restoration Law (NRL), scheduled for 27 February, stands on precarious ground. Recent developments reveal that the European Conservatives and Reformists and Identity and Democracy groups have introduced amendments aiming to overturn the provisional agreement achieved in the trilogue discussions. This pivotal legislation, which once saw a narrow victory of just 12 votes in favour, faces renewed opposition, jeopardizing its enactment.

The Nature Restoration Law is instrumental for cities across Europe, setting ambitious targets to halt the net loss of urban green spaces and tree canopy cover by 2030. It mandates local government participation in crafting national restoration plans and introduces critical measures for the rehabilitation of forest ecosystems and pollinator populations. Moreover, it envisions the planting of 3 billion trees across the EU by the end of this decade, underscoring its significance in combatting biodiversity loss and fostering urban sustainability.

If you want to alert your MEPs against the potential derailment of this crucial, you can use the social media campaign developed by Eurocities to urge the MEPs to stand by the agreement during the trilogue negotiations.
