The municipality of Torres Vedras collected some 13 tonnes of separate waste at this year’s carnival, up from seven tonnes in2018, the municipality has announced.

The breakdown by waste fraction was: 7 tonnes of plastic and metal containers, 1.7 tonnes of paper and 4 tonnes of glass. The result was due to the municipality’s commitment to mitigate the environmental impact of the yearly event, which is dubbed “the most Portuguese carnival in Portugal”, by subscribing to the Eco Event initiative launched by waste management company Valorsul.
