ACR+ member LIPOR and Porto Municipality implemented a pilot project – Embrulha – addressing city's restaurants and their customers in order to reduce food fraction in municipal waste produced in the city. As part of LIPOR “Dose Certa” project strategy, the project “Embrulha” aimed to explore acceptable and environmentally sustainable solution to reduce food waste in Porto’s restaurants.

The study was supported by a group of graduate students from Wageningen University (Netherlands). During one week the students distributed 102 eco-friendly packages for customer’s leftovers in 15 restaurants in Porto. As result 30 kg of food were diverted from garbage, that is the equivalent of 4,91 kilograms of CO2 emissions.

The study also showed that the level of acceptance of the free package for leftovers is relatively high among the owners of the restaurants and their customers (respectively, 85% and 90%).
