On 16 February 2017, ACR+ member Utilitalia, in partnership with Bain & Company, presented an analysis of the costs of multi-material separate collection in Italy. The analysis was conducted on a representative panel of about 24% of packaging collected at national level, showing how multi-material systems represent an extremely important reality in national recycling models, with a collection amount estimated on an annual basis in about 1.9 million tonnes.
According to the analysis, most widespread collection models in Italy are plastic-metal (42%), glass-plastic-metal (25%) and glass-metals (23%). The data also show how aggregation of multiple fractions in integrated collecting systems enables greater operating savings compared to single-material systems.
