UrbanWaste

For the tenth and last time over the course of the project, the 11 pilot cities and regions will meet for a Mutual Learning event on 13 and 14 March 2019. The gathering will serve as the very first debriefing about the eco-innovative measures and strategies they have implemented in recent years.

Although the highlight of URBAN-WASTE this spring will be the final conference in Brussels titled “Waste management in Tourism. Does It Even Matter?”, an equally as important meeting will be hosted by the Dubrovnik – Neretva County in Croatia on 13 and 14 March.

The event will be essential for assessing the impact that the URBAN-WASTE project has had in the 11 pilot cities and regions, as the project partners will have the chance to look at monitoring results and figures and other success indicators. These indicators will include economic, environmental, but also social metrics, which together will contribute towards a holistic assessment methodology. While BOKU University will be in charge of the assessment, Copenhagen University will evaluate the replication potential of these strategies. The results will also be appraised from a gender perspective, thanks to Susan Buckingham, the project’s gender auditor.

The host pilot, Dubrovnik – Neretva County, will also use this opportunity to broach a subject that is very applicable to the city of Dubrovnik itself – waste management in cultural heritage areas. Thus, local urbanism experts will present local solutions and strategies on how tourism is managed alongside with numerous limitations, challenges and other circumstances characteristic of a heritage city. External speakers from Porto and the Danish island of Bornholm will present the solutions and waste management practices they have implemented in their local settings and how are they adapted to heritage and tourism activities.

Several study visits to the Ston heritage site, the Trsteno Botanical Garden and other local sites that have successfully adapted their services and businesses to the principles of sustainable tourism are also planned for the two days.
