WINPOL Full Medium

Faced with the necessity to increase the separate collection of waste on its territory and improve the quality of materials collected, the city of Imola, Italy, upgraded its existing selective collection system to include new and innovative features. The positive results achieved, with over 78% of waste selectively collected, attracted the attention of the WINPOL partners who visited the municipality on 2 October 2019 to understand the reasons for this success.

The study-visit brought them to see Imola’s “ecological islands” – drop-off points consisting of sets of street containers for six waste fractions: organic, garden, paper/cardboard, plastic/metal, unsorted (residual) waste, and glass. Except for this last one, all containers are equipped with an access control system activated by a personal card. They also visited a collection centre and a self-service collection centre where they got acquainted with the pay-as-you-throw system implemented by Imola.

Partners took advantage of this meeting to discuss the preparations of the second thematic seminar, focusing on innovative models for collection, prevention and recycling. Some good practices have already been identified and will be shared on 19 November 2019 in Antwerp.
