Brussels Capital Region 80px

On 1 September 2018,  the ban on all lightweight plastic bags introduced by ACR+ member Brussels Capital Region entered into force. This new ban applied to all the shops in the Brussels Region, regardless of the type of products that they sell. This means that retailers selling food, clothing, beauty products, medicine and other goods are subject to the ban. The ban also applies to markets and all forms of street sales, including second-hand goods, door-to-door sales and others. As such, retailers will have to replace lightweight plastic bags with more durable alternatives, such as paper bags, cloth bags or jars. The transition period is set until 2020. During the transition period, retailers will be allowed to offer bio-based compostable bags for fruits, vegetables, fish, meat and other wet products.

In order to facilitate the transition, Brussels is organising five free workshops to the citizens to encourage them making their own reusable bags as well as adopting its use in their on a day-to-day basis.

As of 1 September 2017, distribution of non-reusable plastic bags has been prohibited in Brussels.
