The Department of Environment and Mobility of ACR+ member Madrid Municipality has published its Waste Prevention and Management Strategy 2018-2022. With this strategy, Madrid is planning to transform its waste management, aiming to minimize waste production and better manage what is generated, treating it as a resource. A budget of 1,554 million euros is allocated to this up to 2022.

Amongst the measures, the programme foresees selective bio-waste collection for all citizens and companies in Madrid, the promotion of agrocomposting and the use of this resource, the introduction of more fractions selectively collected and a move towards reuse to give objects a second life. It also plans to reduce the waste generated by 10% in 2020 compared to 2010, reach 50% of preparation for reuse and recycling of recyclable fractions in 2020 (currently it is at 19.6%) and send a maximum of 35% of waste to landfill.

Last but not least, the City Council has set a 50% reduction target for incineration in 2022, with the view of eliminating completely incineration in 2025. A closure plan will be drawn up at the end of the term of the incinerator contract to study in depth the needs, infrastructure and services necessary for the establishment of zero waste and the circular economy.
