A study published by ACR+ member NABU reveals that microplastics and poorly biodegradable polymer compounds are currently under-regulated because of gaps in the EU’s chemical and product regulations. The study concludes that an EU ban on microplastics in cosmetics and detergents is inevitable, and this for all products not only shower gel and peeling. National bans can increase the pressure on the EU, but are only a stopgap, as rivers and seas know no nation-state boundaries and manufacturers produce for international markets.

Indeed, 977 tons of microplastic and 46,900 tons of dissolved polymers are released into the wastewater every year in Germany alone from cosmetic products as well as detergents, cleaning agents and cleaning agents (WPR). Sewage treatment plants can not completely absorb the ingredients, therefore microplastics reaches our waters despite wastewater treatment. Sewage sludge also contains retained synthetic polymers on agricultural land. Thus, an EU ban on microplastics and extensive regulation of dissolved polymers are indispensable to better protect waters.
