ACR+ member the Eastern Midlands Waste Region (EMWR) published its annual report 2016-2017. The Eastern-Midlands Waste Office is responsible for the overall coordination of the implementation of the Regional Waste Management Plan 2015-2021 whose strategic vision is to rethink the approach to managing waste, by viewing waste streams as valuable material resources, leading to a healthier environment and sustainable commercial opportunities for the economy. It has three main targets: reduce to 0% the direct disposal of unprocessed municipal waste to landfill in favour of higher value pre-treatment processes and indigenous recovery practices; 1% reduction per annum in the quantity of household waste generated per capita over the period of the plan; achieve a recycling rate of 50% of managed municipal waste by 2020.

The annual report summarises the progress made up towards the policy actions set out in the Plan, covering the period from May 2016 to December 2017. It contains the latest validated waste statistics available. In 2015, 307 kg of household waste was produced in average per person in the EMWR, representing 873 kg per household. 82% of households were availing a collection service in the EMWR, half of them with a three bins system.

The report also presents the key challenges – Brexit, plastic, waste capacity, participation, and biodegradable waste – for the Region, the projects developed during 2016 and 2017, the infrastructure planning and the protection actions undertaken by the Region.
