On 11 March 2019, ACR+ member the Municipality of Sofia started a one-year-long pilot initiative to encourage the separate collection of household waste, which includes 300 households from the Nadezhda region of the capital city.

This initiative involves testing a system for separate collection and transport of food waste from households to the Sofia bio-waste facility. The participating households will receive a free set of home containers for separate waste collection, biodegradable sacks for food waste collection and a key to access the shared container enclosures near the apartment buildings.

The initiative is part of the European project "Stimulating Citizen Participation in the Recycling Process - Benefit-As-You-Save". It is funded under the Balkans - Mediterranean Transnational Cooperation Program (2014-2020). The leading partner in the project is the city of Voula in Attica, Greece. Its aim is to help Sofia Municipality in its efforts to encourage citizens to collect waste separately.

It is also expected to allow for a precise quantitative analysis of the waste by the project participants and their daily habits. Another goal of the project is to inform residents of Sofia about the separate waste collection and to continue to apply it after the test period.
