ACR+ is organising a conference titled "Waste Management in Tourism. Does it even matter?" at the Balsamine Theatre in Brussels on 7 May 2019. The culmination of the three-year-long URBAN-WASTE project, which includes our association among its 27 partners, the conference will summarise the outcomes of the project participants’ efforts to promote sustainable waste management in urban tourist destinations. You are encouraged to register early by clicking the link below, as seating is limited.

Brussels, Belgium – In June 2016, a consortium of 27 partners launched “URBAN-WASTE” to promote sustainable waste management in urban tourist destinations. Funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme, the project has brought together key stakeholders along the waste management and tourism value chains to develop eco-innovative and gender-sensitive strategies in order to improve municipal waste management in 11 pilot cities and regions experiencing high inflows of tourists. Among them are ACR+ plus members ORDIF (the Paris Region Waste Observatory), the Municipality of Lisbon and the Region of Epirus.

To wrap up the project, the Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management (ACR+) is organising the final URBAN-WASTE conference titled "Waste Management in Tourism. Does it Even Matter?" at the Balsamine Theater in Brussels on 7 May 2019. The event will serve as an opportunity to look back at the 11 participants' efforts, approaches, methodologies and the results that they achieved through the strategies developed and implemented during the project.

An impressive lineup of experts in and representatives of various subfields of tourism and the 11 participating cities and regions will discuss the results, outputs, figures and overall experiences through storytelling, interactive presentations and panel discussions. Keynote speakers and panellists will include Françoise Bonnet, ACR+'s Secretary-General, Gudrun Obersteiner of BOKU University, Erik Louw of TU Delft, the Government of the Canary Islands, and facilitators from the European Commission.

The final conference "Waste Management in Tourism. Does it Even Matter?" will be the most comprehensive public discussion of the results of the URBAN-WASTE project and of possible ways forward for municipal waste management. Prepare to hear about the experience of cities and regions as diverse as Nicosia, Ponta Delgada, Copenhagen and Tenerife.

Thanks to a number of universities, institutes, NGOs and consultants who provided valuable input and skills throughout the project, the participants have had the opportunity to thoroughly assess their urban metabolism performances and derive valuable insights about improving waste management in order to achieve more sustainable tourism development. We, therefore, encourage the wider public and stakeholders active in the waste and tourism management sectors to attend what promises to be a dynamic exchange of experience and know-how.
