Circular economy will be essential to improve the resource efficiency in Europe, one of the key aspects of the Europe 2020. A strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth report. Public administration, industry and related services are aware of the business opportunities created by improving resource productivity.

A study from the European Commission estimates that increasing resource productivity 2% per year could create over two million jobs more than under a business-as-usual scenario. Another study from the European Commission states that with waste prevention, eco-design, reuse and similar measures European companies could achieve net annual saving of 600 billion euros.

The Eco-design approach can reduce the use of resources from the following perspectives: improving reparability and durability of products; increasing the recyclability of materials by minimizing the use of hazardous substances and increasing the energy efficiency of the production process or the use-phase of products and services.
