On 11 May 2017, ACR+ member Madrid inaugurated its first Community Composting Area, located in the district of Hortaleza. The facility consists of three composters of 600L each and will enable the production of compost which will then be used for the community gardens, pots and orchards of the district. The Community Composting Area arising from a school garden located at the CEIP Luis Cernuda, where students have been cultivating vegetables fertilised with compost they obtained from composting their own organic waste. In October 2016, several organisations, the Municipal Council and the Government Department of Environment and Mobility, together with the active collaboration of the neighbours started the collective project of the Community Composting Area of the district of Hortaleza.

In addition to the installation of the Community Composting Area, a training workshop is included in the project to encourage citizens to bring their organic waste to the Composting Area.

During the inauguration, the delegate of the Ministry of Environment and Mobility and the Councillor-President of the District of Hortaleza also attended the extraction of the first natural compost made by the organic waste brought by the residents of the district.
