Lisbon | Communication campaign on waste reduction

ACR+ member, the city of Lisbon has organized an extensive communication campaign on the economic, social and environmental benefits of reuse and repair activities. In the framework of the European Week for Waste Reduction, the city mobilized a number of local stakeholders committed to contributing to a society based on circular economy principles.

The communication campaign was organized both online as well as in the public spaces.  Lisbon Municipality thus displayed a number of posters around the city. Online, the municipality used a medium of movies presenting initiatives in Lisbon that use secondary raw materials or sets an economical objective to prolong the durability of objects. Exemplary projects focused on the furniture and bike repair centers, creative ways of reusing waste and textile, equipment bank as well as a repair café initiative.

Additionally, several events were also prepared to support the campaign carried out during all week. Notably, Vice-Mayor of the city of Lisbon announced the constitution of Lisbon Municipal Advisory Council for the Prevention of Waste Production. The Advisory Board will be composed of stakeholders (representatives of different business sectors, local authorities, and educational establishments) and citizens willing to contribute to the development of the general guidelines for waste prevention. The Municipality also intends that all the partners actively participate in the definition and implementation of specific measures and good practices to reduce waste.

Circular economy, waste and social development, public procurement, and the use of information system in waste management are some of the main topics which will be discussed by the Advisory Board. The first working session is planned in the beginning of 2018. The Municipality’s aim is to sign a commitment letter in order to promote the implementation of the first measured defined.
