Malta

A new Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) plant was inaugurated on 3 February 2016 by the Prime Minister, Hon Joseph Muscat. This marks the third in a series of various treatment plants inaugurated in the country in recent months.

The purpose of the facility is to continue diverting more waste from being landfilled, particularly organic waste, whilst at the same time generating energy from waste. Referred to as the 'Malta North' facility, the total investment cost of this project reached almost 50 million euros and was co-financed through EU funds. Situated within the Maghtab Environmental Complex, the facility will consist of various processes. The Mechanical Treatment Plant (MTP) will segregate mixed household waste, referred to as Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), in order to extract the organic waste for further treatment, while recyclable materials will also be extracted. The facility is expected to receive and treat 66,000 tonnes per annum of household waste. The MTP will also cater for the mechanical processing of bulky waste, circa 47,000 tonnes per annum, aimed at volume reduction and the separation of ferrous metals.

The facility also comprises an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) Plant which will cater for the treatment of the organic fraction extracted in the first process, together with an expected 39,000 tonnes per annum of cattle and chicken manure.  Waste in the AD Plant will be treated in order to recover energy from biogas, which is produced naturally from the treatment process, while also creating compost as the end product.
