NABU | Over packing fruits and vegetables



ACR+ Member NABU published a study commissioned to GMM Society for Packaging Market Research, showing that nowadays 63 percent of the fruits and vegetables that are sold in Germany are pre-packed.  

The study shows that plastic is the dominant packaging material, since it is also increasingly replacing paper packaging, paperboard or cardboard. Between 2000 and 2014 the plastic need for pre-packages has grown by 78 percent for fruit and by 164 percent for vegetables.

The share of pre-packed vegetables increased by 12 percent in 2014 compared to 2010. The share of pre-packed fruits decreased by 5 percent in the same period.

Between 2000 and 2014, the packaging volume for fresh fruit and vegetables developed differently: packaging made of paper / cardboard / cardboard (PPK) were reduced while plastic packaging increased. Moreover a reduction in the package sizes went together with an intensification of the plastic packaging material (for example, shells instead slides).

More than 17 million tons of packaging is wasted in Germany every year, and every German is producing an average amount of 36 kg waste of plastic packaging per year. One of the reasons for the increasing volume of packaging wasted is that more and more fresh products such as meat, cheese, fruit and vegetables are sold industrially pre-packaged.
