ACR+ member, Svimed, together with the Municipality of Syracuse hosted from 29 August to 4 September 2016 the Canoe Polo World Championships 2016. The initiative was designed with a particular attention on the environment and on food waste prevention.

The Municipality equipped the major events area with bins for a separate waste collection. The organic waste has been collected and sent to a composting facility the Arenaura Municipal Collection Center.

Svimed participated as technical partner preparing the voluntary agreement between the Organizing Committee and the local economic activities (hotel, bar, restaurants and supermarkets) on waste reduction and prevention.

A communication strategy has been developed in order to drag attention on the waste facilities installed and on food waste reduction. The Municipality also created a Green Village and together with the Organizing Committee and in collaboration with Svimed and the Association Zero Waste Syracuse, organized several meetings and initiatives on sustainability, participation, tourism & waste.

During the week two European projects in which ACR+ is currently involved were also presented to the local media: URBAN WASTE and INTHERWASTE.
