BLUEISLANDS | Waste, tourism and islands: launch of Interreg Med Blue Islands

On 17-18 January 2017, ACR+ was in Cyprus to join the kick-off meeting of this new project: Interreg Med Blue Islands, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund until September 2019. This project led by the Cyprus ministry of environment gathers 14 partners, including 9 Mediterranean islands and ACR+ as the communication leader. Its objective is to identify, address and mitigate the effect of the seasonal variation of waste generated on MED islands as an effect of tourism.

The first step will be to assess the dynamics of micro and macro plastics in highly touristic coastal areas. During the next months, surveys will be conducted by the partner islands, on land and at sea. The samples collected will then be studied by the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Based on the results, different action plans will be created and implemented. The surveys will then be repeated in order to evaluate the impact of the new measures.
