ACR+ member the Catalan Waste Agency (ARC) has presented on 13 October 2017 the 2016 data regarding municipal waste management in the metropolitan region of Barcelona, which covers Alt Penedès, Baix Llobregat, Garraf, Maresme, Vallès Occidental y Vallès Oriental.

In 2016, 2.27 million tonnes of waste were generated in the metropolitan region of Barcelona, with a generation per capita of 1.24 kg per inhabitant per day, which is under the average of Catalonia which is of 1.36 kg per inhabitant per day. The figures show a slight increase compared to the previous year (1.35 kg per inhabitant per day) however a tendency towards more sustainable production and consumption is to be noted. Indeed, although the GDP increased of 3.7% - compared to 2015 – the generation of municipal waste was only 0.65% higher than the previous year.

Regarding selective collection, 27.69% of the waste is collected (slightly below the average for Catalonia which is 30.41%). Maresme is the region that best recycles with 33.30% of selective collection.

Josep Maria Tost i Borrás, ARC Director, announced that a debate will start before the end 2017 to develop a new law on waste which would include an individualized model of management, including a pay-as-you-throw system. An extension of the budget is also under study to improve waste management for example with new utility bins, more prevention projects on reuse or more support to the collection of organic waste.
