On 25 October 2017, ACR+ member Contarina, in collaboration with other partners of the EU-funded project EMBRACED such as Fater and Proctor & Gamble, has opened a waste management plant to recycle used nappies and other absorbent hygiene products (AHP). Located in the province of Treviso, the recycling plant will help to reduce AHP waste by 10,000 tonnes per year and save 400 kg of CO2 emissions per tonne treated.

Being one of the most difficult products to reuse, AHPs’ recycling has been made possible following a technological innovation. After 10 years of testing, a technology to recover 300 kg of reusable materials from 1 tonne of waste has been discovered. Half of this output is cellulose (usable for paper), 25% is mixed plastics (for tops, clothespins, and baskets) while the remaining 25% is the polymer which makes the nappies absorbing (usable for rivers’ barriers against floods, or the flower industry).
