ACR+ member UTILITALIA presented at Ecomondo, the leading Euro-Mediterranean area green and circular economy exposition which took place from 07 to 10 November 2017 in Rimini, a new report on the waste management models of several European countries.

The study “Analysis of environmental health management models in major European countries” (Analisi dei modelli di gestione dei servizi di igiene ambientale nei principali Paesi europei) focuses on 5 EU countries: Italy, Germany, the UK, France and Spain. It reveals that Germany ranks amongst the countries with the highest percentage of recycling and incineration (around 35% when the EU average is of 27% of incineration). Italy ranks second in terms of recycling with 49% of waste recycled that is more than the European average (46%). The UK, France and Spain all rank below the average (with 45% for UK, 40% for France and 35% for Spain). Countries with less than 20 million inhabitants have better results than bigger countries.

In other words, the study concludes that in 7 years Italy has almost managed to close the gap with the other countries such as France and the UK, with the highest increase in recycling, in particular regarding the valorisation of bio-waste.

The report also notes that differences can be noticed in the waste management of the capital cities of the five countries under study. London – with a population of 8.7 million inhabitants – has a percentage of separated collection of 34%, Berlin (3.4 million inhabitants) is collecting separately 42% of its waste, Madrid (3.2 million inhabitants) reaches 17% of waste sorted, Rome (2.8 million inhabitants) collects separately 39% of its waste, and Paris collects separately only 18% of its waste.
