OVAM small2

In 2016, Joke Schauvliege, the Flemish Minister for Environment, Nature, and Agriculture, approved the waste management plan for Flemish fisheries. After a successful 18 months since the start of the new collection system for ship-generated waste by the Flemish Fisheries Cooperative (VVC), the new operator of the fishing ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend, ACR+ member OVAM presents an overview.

Flemish ship owners can come with the ship-generated waste in the ports of Zeebrugge and Ostend. The operator VVC ensures the registration of the collected waste and proper storage pending further disposal. The VVC, which is also a wholesaler in material for the fishing industry, was founded by and for ship owners. Almost all Flemish ship owners are affiliated with the inclusive collection system, by paying an annual fee.

Around 67 tonnes of solid waste and 38 tonnes of liquid waste have been collected since 2016. The solid waste consists mainly of old nets and ropes, rubber, and residual waste, whereas the liquid waste is exclusively oil-containing waste. The VVC provides quarterly data on collected ship-generated waste to the OVAM, the Public Waste Agency of Flanders.

The VVC also carries out the Fishing for Litter project, in cooperation with the Federal Department for Environment. They provide Flemish fishermen with big bags to deposit waste that they fish with their nets. The big bags are delivered together with the regular waste generated by the ship at the VVC collection points. In this way, Flemish fishermen ensure the preservation of the natural environment of the North Sea and reduce the amount of waste floating in the sea.
