Bruxelles-Propreté, Brussels Environment and Brussels Municipality | The Brussels Region to improve cleanliness in commercial streets

27 October 2025 Members' News

Bruxelles-Propreté, Brussels Environment, and several municipalities, including Brussels Municipality, have joined forces to improve cleanliness in commercial areas in the Brussels Region. They are launching awareness and inspection campaigns targeting waste management by businesses, particularly illegal dumping and repeated non-compliance. Following an initial awareness phase, enforcement actions have begun. The City of Brussels carried out inspections, examining over 2 000 waste bags and identifying around 470 as non-compliant. Investigations are underway to identify and fine offenders.

A recent study by the Union des Classes Moyennes (Union of Self-Employed Workers and SMEs) revealed that nearly 70% of professionals lack a mandatory waste collection contract, despite multiple licensed operators being available. Even among compliant businesses, poor practices persist, such as using residential waste bags or ignoring collection schedules. To address these issues, the region is implementing the two-step plan: first, inform and raise awareness through distributed guidance documents; second, conduct regular inspections and issue fines. This initiative will continue through 2025 and into 2026, expanding to more municipalities to combat improper commercial waste management across the Brussels region.
