Innovation through circular procurement

Across Europe, public authorities are showing how procurement can drive meaningful change. The C-PRONE Knowledge Hub brings together these stories: real examples of how circular thinking is shaping more sustainable and socially responsible practices.

A striking example comes from the Municipality of Groningen in the Netherlands. With the ambition to become zero waste by 2030, the city launched Gronings Goud, a project that transforms post-consumer textiles into fabric for refurbishing office chairs. Working closely with its furniture supplier and local social enterprises, Groningen created a high-quality material made from 75% post-consumer textiles and 25% recycled polyester. The initiative reduces waste, saves virgin materials and supports local employment, showing how procurement can link environmental and social impact within a single circular contract.
