ACR+ member CITEO has conducted a study by interviewing 5200 consumers on their sorting habit of 124 everyday waste packaging. The examined 124 packages are the most common packaging that constitutes half of the total weight of household waste in France.

The study revealed that 73 % of respondents know and follow the sorting instructions. However the sorting habits are not systematic, meaning that some packages are sorted better than others. The groups of packaging which sorting results are high (97 %) are the ones that simple, mono-material and very well identifiably by consumers, such as bottles, tin cans and carton. On the other hand, packages that: remain dirty after the product is consumed; or the ones that contained harmful or dangerous materials (e.g. bleach, nail polish, etc.); as well as the ones that people consume outside their home; or have to bring to a designated specific container are among those that are sorted the least.

To ameliorate the sorting results certain measures can be applied, notably:

  • Encourage and cooperate with companies in developing eco-designed packaging (mono-material, without unnecessary wrapping);
  • Developing a network of separate collection containers in close proximity to people’s home and making them better distributed and easier accessible;
  • Raising awareness on the ways to sort as well as on the benefit of separate collection of waste by using tools such as mobile apps and targeted communication campaigns;
