A sustainable energy transition is necessary to achieve the Flemish climate objectives. However, the technologies that are central to this transition rely on different critical materials. “Urban mining” through collection and recycling of these materials in existing applications should help alleviate the pressure on the stocks of primary raw materials.

ACR+ member OVAM studied the estimated demand, until 2030, for 17 metallic elements in sustainable energy technologies “Separate collection and recycling are essential for the demand for materials for the energy transition”. The study takes silver as an example, seeing that the demand for silver for sustainable energy technologies by 2030, estimated at 133 tonnes, already accounts for more than a quarter of the Flemish reserve budget of 452 tonnes. However, correct collection and recycling will become an important tool to relieve the pressure on primary extraction.
