ACR+ member OVAM published the results of its annual household waste inventory for the year 2021. The amount of household waste last year was 471 kg per inhabitant, the lowest figure since 1994. The amount of residual waste also decreased, after a slight increase in 2020 due to COVID, from 147 kg per inhabitant in 2020 to 140 kg in 2021. As much as 70% of the waste was collected selectively. 68.3% goes to a facility for recycling, composting or fermentation. 62.6% is effectively recycled. Important objectives from the Household Waste and Similar Commercial Waste Implementation Plan 2016-2022 have thus been achieved or are in sight. In 2023, a new Local Materials Plan will further sharpen these targets to make Flanders a circular society.
