In 2014, ACR+ member Bruxelles Propreté started a pilot study with the introduction of orange bags for the collection of food waste in nine municipalities of the Brussels Region. Seeing the success of this test phase, the system will be generalised to the whole region starting from January 2017.

The system will work on a voluntary basis as it is the case in the municipalities so far involved. Currently, 14,600 are voluntarily participating, representing between 5 and 10 per cent of the population in these municipalities.

The waste collected through the orange bags will be used to produce energy, biogas and digestate the will be also used for agricultural soil enrichment.
