On 19 November 2018, ACR+ co-organised with its member Brussels Environment and Zero Waste Europe a conference aiming to help cities and regions in their transition to zero waste, focusing especially on organic waste. The event brought together academics, experts, policy-makers and activists to present a broad European overview of exemplary initiatives in terms of prevention and separate collection of organic waste. The conference was organised in the framework of the European Week for Waste Reduction, which this year has seen record levels of actions taking place across Europe. ACR+ opened the event emphasising the importance of bio-waste as part of a circular economy perspective.

Experiences and challenges faced by the different actors of the sector were shared through panel discussions and workshops. ACR+ was well represented during this event as three members were invited as speakers. Indeed, SYBERT, the waste operator of Besançon in France, exposed the results obtained via a decentralised community composting system. The Catalan Waste Agency focused on the impact of involving the private sector in organic waste collection and treatment in the Spanish region of Catalonia, and LIPOR hosted a workshop presenting its food waste prevention strategy.

This successful event showed that the interest in food waste reduction is high and the numerous examples show that solutions exist and can be adopted by the large majority.
