Hosted by Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, the first meeting of the Steering Committee brought together the project partners for the first time since its kick-off in October 2018.

Sponsored by the EU’s LIFE programme, LIFE TACKLE explores environmental management solutions in stadiums during football games. If the LIFE Tackle project itself were a football game, then the meeting in Pisa would be the dressing room pre-game team talk. That is because the meeting was mainly focused on what the project will deliver and bring this spring.

Within the project, ACR+ is one of four technical partners and is responsible for replicating existing good practices and testing them in one of 10 pilot stadiums. In Pisa, the association presented the strategy and the approach that will be used for this purpose. A long list of potential stadiums is currently being assessed in order to propose and validate the final shortlist of ten locations. Among them are the Lansdowne road stadium in Dublin, the Olympic stadium in Rome, the Dragão stadium in Porto and the Luigi Ferraris stadium in Genoa.

The role of the 10 pilot stadiums will be to test good practices and innovative measures previously identified elsewhere. The stadiums and their managers, as well as local waste operators and local authorities, will receive a training prior to the testing phase in order to maximise the benefits of the pilot trials. Game goers will not be left out either; a survey will be developed in order to assess the benefits of the pilot test from their point of view.

In addition, a large pool of other entities that could be interested in the results of the project has been identified. Their list will be shared with the LIFE TACKLE Replication Management Board, which will assess the reproducibility potential of project activities, as well as validate outputs and deliverables based on their reproducibility. The board includes representatives of local and regional authorities; national football associations, such as those of Azerbaijan, Belgium and Germany; and UEFA, as the entity that will gather the outcomes of this year’s activities, contribute its European perspective and include certain outputs in its own strategies.

In short, this timely meeting served as a good opportunity for the team to present, discuss and reflect on what is about to come in order to make the best out of this ground-breaking project.
