After launching the project in October 2019, the REthinkWASTE consortium has been hard at work exploring ways to improve municipal waste collection through better taxation and consumer engagement. In February, the consortium and external specialists gathered in Brussels to talk about best practices in pay as you throw (PAYT) and know as you throw (KAYT) during a day-long seminar.

Based on the presentations of a dozen case studies, the participants in the event concluded that, so far, PAYT has not managed to completely solve the inherent injustice of taxation, because certain communities like newcomers to cities continue to be disadvantaged; that the environmental benefits of PAYT and of increased rates of separate collection need to be well and frequently communicated to residents in order for PAYT to work; that, in some cases, PAYT and KAYT are schemes that can pay for themselves; and that the social, environmental, and economic benefits of these schemes are very closely interlinked. All the presentations and videos, as well as the recording of the first half of the seminar, are available on the ACR+ website.

To synthesise the information discussed during the seminar, ACR+ will publish a handbook of best practices in PAYT and KAYT in the coming months. Stay tuned for more details!
