Following the necessary period of adaptation and changes of their municipal waste management systems due to the pandemic, various local authorities and waste operators are now starting to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 on their performances and collection rates. In several countries, surveys are conducted (at national, regional or local level) to assess the situation and provide a summary and statistics on waste collection and treatment activities. The page managed by ACR+ on municipal waste management and COVID-19 is reflecting this change, keeping in mind that it is a dynamic process and getting a clear picture is complicated. So far, data are available for Milano, Catalonia, England, and France.

As a general trend (based on the data received), it seems that mixed waste collections is maintained, the highest rate of disruptions has been noticed for recyclable waste, despite a willingness to keep it. The biggest impacts are on bulky, garden waste, and civic amenity sites. There is a tendency to re-open these last ones as an increase in fly tipping has been observed. Areas with high touristic activities and many businesses like Barcelona experienced an overall decrease of the waste generated. In Catalonia, the generation of waste generation fall of 25%. In Milano, the decrease of the waste collected is of 27.5% (comparison between 2020 and 2019 at the same period).

ACR+ Secretariat is currently working on a survey (to be shared with ACR+ members) which will help to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on municipal waste management and analyse the key factors to increase the resilience of the collection systems.
