The first Local Living Lab of Biocircularcities in ACR+ member Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) was held on 22 March. The project was presented focusing on the analysis of the current biowaste management system in AMB, one of the pilots of the project. The participants discussed how the high amounts of impurities in biowaste municipal stream is one of the key challenges to be addressed. The positive impact of door-to-door collection systems and smart bins was highlighted, together with the advantage brought by incentive practices for citizens with virtuous behaviours. Other conclusion was that separate collection has to be improved, the new added valued product as bioplastics cannot be escalated to an industrial level yet as the performance of the process is very low and that it could be interesting to include the upgrading of the biogas to biomethane as part of the selected chain for the metropolitan area of Barcelona pilot.
