Between 2017 and 2019, the amount of litter in Flanders increased by 14%, according to ACR+ member OVAM. The Flemish objective of reducing litter by 20% by 2022 was therefore seriously compromised. In cooperation with the Flemish Minister for the Environment, a virtual consultation round was therefore held with private and public parties in order to formulate additional efforts in the area of prevention and enforcement. This resulted in a Flemish litter charter with dozens of additional actions. Some of these include avoiding single-use packaging in online shops, food boxes and take-away meals; facilitating the distribution of bag ashtrays; or replacing paper receipts with digital ones.
