Pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago deposited last summer 23 tonnes of packaging in the containers provided for this purpose in 55 eco-shelters in Navarre, which is 80% more than in the same period of 2021. Through this initiative of the Department of Rural Development and Environment of ACR+ member Government of Navarra and Ecoembes, the integrated management system that coordinates the recycling of packaging in Spain, 6,493 kg of waste were deposited in the plastic containers and 16,389 kg in the paper and cardboard containers.

To this end, 5,500 reusable bags made from recycled PET were distributed to combat the littering. This allowed pilgrims to collect the waste that they generated or that they found along the route, and then deposit it in the points installed in the eco-shelters.
