EIXOECOLOGIA big

ACR+ is pleased to welcome the Urban Ecology Agency of Eixo Atlántico (Eixoecologia) as a new member.

The Urban Ecology Agency of Eixo Atlántico (Eixoecologia) has been created in 2009 as an innovative element to improve environmental management in the municipalities in the Euro-region Galicia – North of Portugal.

Manuel Antonio Rodríguez Suárez, from the Waste and Resource Management Area of Eixoecologia, replies to our questions.

ACR+: "Why have you joined ACR+?"
M. A. Rodríguez Suárez: "One of Eixoecologia missions is to enhance sustainable development within the Euro-region municipalities encouraging waste prevention and a more rational waste management therefore, our main expectations regarding our membership to ACR+ are: the promotion of smart resource consumption and waste management through prevention at the source, reuse and recycling within Eixo Atlantico municipalits; the participation in networks for learning and exchanging information on better waste performance, and offering a unique perspective on waste management practices in Galicia and the North of Portugal; and the promotion of multi-stakeholder partnerships in order to encourage practical actions in our municipalities."

ACR+: "How do you cooperate with local and regional authorities?"
M. A. Rodríguez Suárez: "The cooperation with local and regional authorities within the Euro-region Galicia-North of Portugal is managed through the Eixo Atlântico do Noroeste Penínsular.  Eixo Atlântico is a cross-border association composed of 38 cities in the North of Portugal and Galicia (Spain) which main goal is to support the economic, social, environmental, cultural, scientific and technological development of its members.

We serve the general interest of the Eixo Atlántico member cities by providing scientific and technical support towards sustainable development. These actions are focused on local sustainability, sustainable territorial planning and better waste management performance. Since 2011 Eixoecologia has been holding a yearly event for Eixo Atlântico members to share best practices regarding resource management and sustainability."

ACR+: "Could you share with us one of your main achievements, a successful project you conducted?"
M. A. Rodríguez Suárez: "The project Desourb (Sustainable urban development) is the result of the collaboration between the Territorial Studies Institute (Xunta de Galicia) and Eixoecologia (Eixo Atlantico do Noroeste Peninsular). This project has defined an innovative model for territorial planning of the Euroregion Galicia-North of Portugal.  The project has come before the need to coordinate planning on both sides of the border by means of actions aimed at the introduction of the concept of sustainability in the planning and management of the territory for all cities of the Euroregion.

This project has led to the development of the following projects, among others:

ACR+: "Do you have a main project that you would like to implement in the upcoming year?"
M. A. Rodríguez Suárez: "Eixoecologia is currently starting a project that aims to improve waste management performance in small and medium municipalities within the Euro-region through: the assessment of the service from an environmental, economic and quality perspective, using indicators developed by Eixoecologia; the exchange of best practices among technicians, waste operators and decision makers; the promotion of partnerships in order to encourage practical actions and funding opportunities; the implementation of specific actions at a local and regional level."
