The project Promotion of Public Procurement of Innovation for Resource Efficiency and Waste Treatment (PPI4Waste) explores mechanisms to overcome barriers to public procurement of innovation in the waste sector.

Highlights

PPI4Waste final conference took place on 12 September 2017 in Brussels. Entitled “Feedback and opportunities for public procurement of innovation in the waste sector”, gathered public procurers and suppliers committed to boost innovation in the waste sector. The conference showcased the main findings of the project - in particular, the report on PPI4Waste lessons for PPI uptake in the waste sector - and gave the opportunity of several discussions during which experts and other participants agreed that more cooperation was needed to support public procurement of innovation (PPI) and help increase the uptake of innovative solutions for waste management. Cooperation can indeed facilitate transfer knowledge on PPI, but also lead to concrete coordinated or joint tenders that will reduce costs and risks.

More details can be found in the press release of the conference.

The main outputs of the projects are available online on www.ppi4waste.eu.

THE PROJECT

The PPI4Waste project aims at:

•    Identifying common needs within the public sector in Europe;
•    Creating an Interest Group and a Purchasing Community to exchange and collaborate on the topic of PPI4Waste;
•    Implementing capacity-building workshops for cross-border public procurement of innovation;
•    Promoting dynamic coordinated procurement of eco-innovative solutions in the field of resource efficiency and waste prevention, reuse and recycling;
•    Promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors.

In particular, the project aims to develop know-how on PPI procedures and make state-of-the-art solutions accessible to other procurers. In turn, this will encourage a quicker market uptake of such solutions and improve the quality and efficiency of services provided by public authorities.
