Windows 10 end-of-support risks massive e-waste – join EWWR 2025 to act

22 September 2025 Circular Lifestyles, ACR+ News

The EWWR and global circular economy and digital rights groups are warning that Microsoft’s end of free Windows 10 support on 14 October (coinciding with International E-Waste Day) will push millions of PCs into premature obsolescence, generating over 700 million kg of avoidable e-waste. With 400 million devices unable to upgrade to Windows 11, users face buying new hardware, paying for temporary support, switching OS, or risking insecure software. An international coalition is urging Microsoft to extend free support, while the Right to Repair Europe coalition calls on the EU to enforce strong Ecodesign rules to prevent software-driven obsolescence across computers, medical devices, smart home tech, and more.

To fight this, join the 2025 edition of the EWWR, which is focusing on electronic and electrical waste reduction. Also, check out other initiatives such as International E-Waste Day (14 October) and International Repair Day (18 October) to take action!
