RDC Environment | How to fight against planned obsolescence?

ACR+ member RDC Environment has been mandated by Belgian ministers Marghem and Peeters, in charge of environment and consumers' protection at federal level, to study planned obsolescence by demonstrating that it actually exists and fight against it.

RDC Environment director Bernard de Caevel has already elaborated a strategy where eco-conception is favoured and consumers invited to buy products lasting longer and which can be repaired. He also highlighted that several measures can be taken for products to be easier and cheaper to repair, such as making compulsory the provision of spare parts in a reasonable deadline and for a reasonable price.

Another solution suggested by Bernard de Caevel is to favour repairing (by professional) from an economic point of view, through for example a change of the VAT, tax incentives or a reduction of social costs.
