ARC | New campaign brings the composting cycle across Catalonia

The Catalan Waste Agency (ARC) has launched a campaign across Catalonia to promote organic waste separation and highlight the importance of compost for soil health and sustainability. The initiative includes interactive street booths in cities like Barcelona, Lleida, and Tarragona with the mysterious message “If you like strawberries, come in...”. These booths offer a sensory experience that walks visitors through the composting cycle—from food consumption to waste, composting, and back to cultivation. As a symbolic gesture, participants who pledge to separate organic waste correctly receive a strawberry plant to grow at home.

In addition to this, more than 220 awareness-raising activities are taking place throughout Catalonia, including informational stands, compost self-service points, and a floral installation made with 500 organic compost bins. Technical workshops are also being held, such as one on composting and another online session on soil restoration with organic amendments. Every year, Catalonia processes over one million tonnes of organic material, producing more than 300 000 tonnes of compost.
