05 June 2013

The recovery of organic matter through composting is one of the essential processes in the National Strategy for Waste Reduction and it is a priority objective for LIPOR. “Alquimia da Matéria Orgânica Project”  is an environmental education project implemented by LIPOR - Intermunicipal Waste Management of Greater Porto, which aimed to promote the reduction of organic waste through composting, being a vehicle to facilitate citizenship and quality of life either in the school community or the community at large. With this project was proposed the application of a method of work that is to be consistent, where information, training, experimentation and production are a vehicle to raise awareness of the real value of organic matter.

Phase 1 - Diagnosis
At this stage was intended to make a survey of conditions in the school grounds, through a work meeting. It also hold up a training assistants operational and teachers, seeking their awareness of the problem of organic matter for composting, assessing the needs of the school community.

Phase 2 - Experimental Method - Mini Composter
The second phase consisted in an initial approach to the topic of composting classes belonging to the working group. It was built a mini-composter to apply the experimental method in order to be able to view and record the different stages of the composting process.

Phase 3 - Composting
After the experimental method, was be given to the school an outside composter to start the whole process of composting. This phase required proper monitoring and recording of the composting process according to the material provided.

Phase 4 - Implementation
There were two workshops about "Biological Agriculture", directed to teachers and assistants operating, to provide the necessary expertise in this area.
Subsequently, the participating schools and wishing to develop local culture, was given a "kit" of herbs. This "kit" was designed to implement in the field of knowledge gained in the workshop in an autonomous way.

Stage 5 - Results
In this stage, the schools had submitted the results of the different phases of the project, with a small report or record of activities.
