RES URBIS is a project founded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme under the topic “Unlocking the potential of urban organic waste” (CIRC-05-2016). It started on 1 January 2017 and it has a duration of 3 years.

This project is carried out by CIABC – Research Centre for Protection of Environment and Cultural Heritage of the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and involves 21 partners, including academic partners (10), private partners (7), public authorities (3) and industrial associations (1), from 8 different countries. The RES URBIS overall aims to integrate into a single facility and to use one main technology chain for the conversion of several types of urban bio-wastes into bioplastics, specifically PHA polyhydroxyalkanoate, while also minimizing any residual or consequent waste to be disposed of, contributing to promote the circular economy.

On 29, 30 and 31 January 2018, the third meeting of RES URBIS project took place in Lisbon. There the 21 partners reported their advances on the project and discussed the new goals to achieve. During the meeting a preliminary cluster analysis was shown, made from completed data collection related to waste generation, treatment options and key parameters from 5 stakeholders (Barcelona, Copenhagen, Lisbon, South Wales and Trento), and also from each territorial mass balanced analysis. A preliminary screening LCA, based on available data, was revealed too.

Between the last meeting in Cardiff and this meeting, the different lab and pilot scale experiments have been started. So, in Lisbon each manager of the different experiments presented their progress and preliminary conclusions as well as the future project planning. Different partners also presented the technical challenges related to PHA-based bioplastics products development. Likewise, the four territorial clusters (Italy, Portugal, Spain and United Kingdom) acknowledged the consumers perception of biowaste-derived biobased products and regulatory impacts and barriers for each country.

Urban investment areas are a priority for RES URBIS. It has described the framework for urban investment and the different platforms and founding authorities that can be interesting for the exploitation of project. At the same time, projection scenarios for business models were made. The meeting included an open session with stakeholders and public audience. The following stakeholders shared their experience with the partners of this project: The Portuguese Water and Waste Service Regulation Authority, Portuguese Environment Agency, Associaçao Sistema Terrestre Sustentável, Águas do Tejo Atlantico (from Portugal), Kobenhaus Komune (from Denmark), Pyhäjärvi Institute (from Finland) and BBSRC Bioscience for the future (from United Kingdom).

Irrevocably, this third meeting has been useful to share the work and progress made by each partner and know the reality of the project as well as the next steps to take.
