Small scale in vessel composting
Since 2005 it is prohibited in Sweden to deposit bio waste at landfills. The separate collection and treatment target is 35% of the municipal bio waste by 2010, including home composting. Electromechanical composting in apartment buildings or annexes of it allow for composting of the kitchen waste from the residents. This method is under development. The electromechanical composting units (3 x 1.2 x 1.5m) compost the kitchen waste from up to 100 households. Around 1000 units have been installed and each year 70 new units are installed in Sweden. The apartment residents bring their kitchen waste in a biodegradable paper bag to the unit, usually situated in a closed, clean and ventilated room in the baseline of the apartment or an annex to the apartment. The distance that the residents have to travel for bringing their kitchen waste is never more than 100m. Usually 60 to 80% participants of the potential number of participants are participating. The machine (made of steel and recycled plastic) turns and adds wood pellets at each addition of kitchen waste. The compost is ready in 4 to 6 weeks. On average Swedish residents produce 3 liters of kitchen waste/week or 1.2 kg/ week. Assuming that between 60 to 80% of the on average 100 families participate (one family has on average 2.3 persons) between 165.6 to 220.8 kg kitchen waste are treated per week or between 8.5 and 11.5 tons a year per composting unit.
