More than 4300 action in 2010: the EWWR confirms its success as a popular European event!

During the 2010 EWWR, 32 public authorities across 18 countries coordinated the implementation of 4346 actions across Europe.

Organised by the Catalan Waste Agency in the framework of the European Week for Waste Reduction

The meeting is intended for all players involved in programmes aimed at enhancing prevention, and its aim is to present economic tools for reducing waste. It particularly highlights the Systems of Payment for Waste Production in Catalonia and Europe. The talks will focus on the structure of the tools, the economic results and their impact on waste prevention in five pioneering regions of northern and southern Europe. The 8th Municipal Waste Prevention Seminar will present economic instruments for waste prevention, with special emphasis on pay-as-you-throw schemes in Catalonia and Europe. The talks will focus on the structure of the instruments, their economic results and their impact on waste prevention in five pioneering regions in northern and southern Europe.

The main goals of the Seminar are:

• To take a more in-depth look at the planning stages ofpay-as-you-throw schemes (adaptation of the waste collectionsystem, communication campaigns, service maintenancesystems, changes to municipal by-laws, etc.).

• To emphasis the economic results and impact of wastereduction and resource recovery by examining the experienceof cities that have implemented pioneering pay-asyou-throw schemes for domestic and commercial users.

• To evaluate the application of municipal refuse disposalfees in Catalonia.

• To reflect on the role of economic instruments in fosteringchanges in behaviour regarding waste prevention.

In parallel to these talks the Enrenou de mobles (FurnitureDesignathon) event will take place, aimedat raising awareness about excess bulkywaste and the possibilities of reuse.

In celebration of the 2010 edition of the EUROPEAN WEEK FOR WASTE REDUCTION (www.ewwr.eu), whose secretariat is managed  by ACR+, we are pleased to invite you to the "European Environment Evening".

This Gala event (including cocktail and dinner) will take place on 25 November from 18.30 to 22.30 in the famous Belgian Comic Strip Center (rue des Sables 20, 1000 Brussels - www.cbbd.be).

On this particular occasion, the DG Environment of the European Commission will announce the winners of the "EMAS 2010 edition", the most prestigious award in environmental management (see full details of this ceremony are at www.emasawards.eu). 

This evening also fits within the 2-day Conference on "Europe Environment Policy: what's next? Towards a genuine 7th Environmental Action Programme", that Brussels Environment is organizing on 25 and 26 November, in the framework of the EU Belgian Presidency (www.eapdebate.org).

Making producers fully responsible for all WEEE management costs

ACR+ has decided, given the forecasted procedures to be made on the WEEE-recast for a political agreement by the council on 14 October 2010 and EP plenary sitting on 19 October 2010 (indicative dates), to put pressure on decision makers by sending both a letter and press release to all national WEEE-experts in order to reiterate our point of view on the issue of financial responsibility.

Evaluation on waste and environmental regulations

Food wastage is emerging as a still-to-be-concretized political priority in North-Western Europe.

A new project titled GreenCook is aimed at reducing food wastage at home and out of home (at the restaurant, at the canteen, in the supermarket) and to make the North-Western Europe a model of sustainable food management by in-depth work on the consumer / food relationship.
