WES

Presentation

The WES – Water and Environment Support in the ENI Southern Neighbourhood Region – project aimed at protecting the environment and improving the management of scarce water resources in the Mediterranean region. Among its key objectives, WES tackled problems related to pollution prevention and water use efficiency.

Project funded by the European Commission under the EuropAid programme, 2019 - 2023.

The project's purpose was to contribute to increase the capacity of various stakeholders involved in pollution reduction and water management in order to support them in formulating and implementing environmental and water policies. WES built on the experience gained through the predecessor projects, the “Sustainable Water Integrated Management and Horizon 2020 Support Mechanism” (SWIM-H2020 SM) project 2016-2019 and the “Sustainable Water Integrated Management Support Mechanism (SWIM SM) project 2010-2015. It strived for increasing the capacities of stakeholders and creating the conditions for knowledge exchange and ownership in the Partner Countries. The countries covered were Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia.

Activities

The project activities supported the agenda of the Union for the Mediterranean on Environment and Water and the objectives of the Barcelona Convention concerning the Mediterranean marine and coastal environmental protection.

ACR+ contributed to several key activities of the project in order to promote circular economy, supporting the implementation of the Green Economy roadmap with a focus on the Solid Waste Management sector. In particular, it participated in:

  • consolidating activities on Green public procurement.
  • sustainable medical waste management
  • construction and demolition waste
  • waste from electrical and electronic equipment
  • decentralized management of organic waste

ACR+ also focused on the fight against plastic pollution, especially regarding Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) items in Jordan with support given to the Ministry of Environment to develop a joint public-private partnership roadmap to reduce the use of SUPs.
