Belfast City Council | Red labels to improve waste collection

25 September 2025 Members' News

Belfast City Council is reminding residents that from 29 September, bins that do not follow updated collection guidelines will receive a red tag and will not be collected. This follows the summer rollout of amber tags, which acted as warnings for issues such as overfilled bins, extra bags, or incorrect recycling. To avoid a red tag, residents must ensure that bin lids are fully closed, that bins are used without liners, and that only one mixed waste bin per household is presented unless extra capacity is approved. Red-tagged bins will only be collected once the issue is corrected. Residents are encouraged to use free alternatives if bins are full, such as booking a bulky waste collection, taking waste to recycling centers, flattening packaging, and maximising food waste recycling.
