Bruxelles-Propreté | Positive results for the cleanliness triathlon in Ixelles
Between 17 May and 27 June, the municipality of Ixelles and Bruxelles-Propreté organised the “Cleanliness Triathlon” in one of the neighbourhoods of the municipality. This initiative aimed to raise awareness about waste disposal rules, track violations, and enforce regulations. During the first phase, 512 improperly disposed trash bags were identified across 19 streets. Red stickers were placed on these bags, while nearly 100 posters and over 150 face-to-face interactions helped inform residents about proper disposal times and upcoming fines.
In the second phase, stricter enforcement was introduced, leading to a 30% drop in improperly placed trash bags. Over 40 offenders were identified and now face fines ranging from EUR 100 to EUR 300. The campaign's success was credited to combining education with enforcement. Results were publicly displayed in the area to thank compliant residents and deter future violations. The Cleanliness Triathlon will return in the fall, as the regional agency aims to make such actions long-term to improve the living environment in Brussels.
